(The confusion of the information age)
The events of the past weeks have left many people with a sense of uncertainty.
When events around us begin to accelerate, explanations multiply as well. Old texts, prophecies and interpretations resurface. There is always someone who already sees the pattern, recognizes the actors, and gives a name to what is happening.
I am not turning to a nearly two-thousand-year-old book for that reason.
Not as a religious explanation, and not as a prophecy.
I turn to it because this text describes human and social situations with surprising accuracy: how an era begins to fall apart long before anything spectacular happens.
I am not looking in it for when the end of the world will come, but for how human beings behave when the world around them becomes uncertain.
The Book of Revelation begins with the opening of the seals.
This is not a catastrophe. It is a phenomenon: the disappearance of a shared reality.
When there are no longer simply different opinions about the same event, but entirely different worlds. Everyone hears the same news, yet each person sees a completely different story in it.
The strange feeling becomes more frequent: as if we were not even talking about the same thing.
When the familiar shared reality begins to break apart, people do not necessarily become enemies — they become inhabitants of different worlds.
Even while sitting at the same table, we may no longer live in the same reality.
Before great conflicts appear, it is usually not weapons that emerge first, but the loss of understanding.
Are we still able to remember what connects us?
